Mucklestone Nursery near Market Drayton in Shropshire
North Shropshire’s / Staff’s new specialist Plant Centre
Mucklestone Nurseries is a newly re-established nursery set up jointly by William Friend who owns the site and Brian Watkins who owns and operates the business (Mucklestone nursery map here). They have known each other since childhood when they sang in Mucklestone Church Choir together! William now lives and has a nursery in Kent where he grows ‘Mediterranean’ plants, suited to the dry, exposed but mild micro-climate of the Isle of Thanet. ‘Mucklestone Nurseries’ specialises in a complimentary range of plants suited to the moister, more acidic conditions of the west and north of Britain, thus allowing a vast range of plants to be grown across the two sites. The contrast between the two areas allows the opportunity to provide an extremely wide range of plants each in its optimal growing conditions. The areas around the nursery and around the farmstead are being planted to form woodland, meadow garden areas and an arboretum. This allows the majority of plants to be propagated from stock of proven hardy-ness and suitability to the area. William has restored the farmhouse gardens with traditional mixed borders and orchards.
Why do visitors enjoy a visit to our Nursery
- Free local delivery and garden consultation service
- Free consultation from a specialist in Meadow, Moorland and Marshland plants for the acidic and humid conditions of the North and West
- Stock of specimen and hedging trees and shrubs for landscapers and garden designers
Specialists in Meadow, Moorland and Marshland plants
We also hold an exceptionally extensive collection of bamboos. Mucklestone Nurseries is in a stunning location, with ornamental plantings. Church Farm has extensive native woodlands, ponds and natural unimproved meadows. It is managed under a ‘countryside stewardship scheme’, to enhance these habitats for the many threatened species such as wild daffodils and native dormice, found on the farm. Visitors can explore the garden areas at any time at no charge or alternatively check our website for open days, when visitors can be shown round the farm, woodlands, gardens and Nursery.
Landscaping
Brian Watkins undertakes hard and soft landscaping projects during the winter season, or will simply select plants and plant up the bare corners of your garden to give the effect you desire. William is available by appointment (01843 862060), during his visits from Kent to give talks to garden groups in the area. Plants from both nurseries are available on the website www.botanyplants.co.uk.
